Singer Mark Sandman coined the phrase “low rock” to describe the sonorous, languid groove he created with the acclaimed Boston band Morphine. Sadly, the band’s time together was cut short in 1999 when Sandman suffered a heart attack in Italy while onstage with Morphine and died on the way to the hospital. ( Read more... )

Neil Young - Neil Young (1968)
Neil Young is a prolific Canadian songwriter who has been releasing albums consistently since the 1960s. He is known for his unique, outspoken and independent style, and as an occasional member of folk-rock supergroup Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young.

Neil Young - Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere (1969)

Neil Young's second album was hugely different from his debut. Whilst his first album was subdued and full of varied subtle textures and instrumentation, Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere was simple, raw and unpolished. The reason for this were the musicians behind him. Whilst before he had used various session players, now he was joined by his own backing band, Crazy Horse. They weren't the most technically advanced musicians, but Danny Whitten (guitar), Billy Talbot (bass) and Ralph Molina (drums) together formed a fantastically solid rhythm section to support Young's distinctive vocals and ragged guitar work. All the songs on Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere featured just the four of them, with no overdubs, with the exception of a violin on one track and backing vocals from Robin Lane on another. The record began with the concise, overdriven rocker "Cinnamon Girl", which remains one of Young's most well known songs to this day. But the focal points of the album were the two epic songs "Down By The River" and "Cowgirl In The Sand", which branched out into sprawling guitar jams. These two brilliant songs were both poetic and ferocious at the same time, and cemented Young's position as a successful and respected solo artist.

Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young - Crosby, Stills & Nash (1969), Deja Vu (1970)

The folk-rock supergroup Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young are today remembered as one of the bands who best epitomised the spirit of the 60s. They are most well known for their lush harmony vocals and lyrics that capture the turbulence of the era. Stephen Stills was originally a leading member of Buffalo Springfield, and when that band broke up he joined together with ex-Byrd David Crosby and Grahamn Nash (previously of the British group The Hollies). They were an instant success, with a truly unique sound and a fantastic debut album that catapulted them to stardom. The album Crosby, Stills & Nash showcases the differing songwriting styles of the three members. Crosby's songs were abstract and experimental - he had left the Byrds due to friction with other members, but with his new bandmates his unique style was allowed to flourish. Nash's contributions were the catchy radio-friendly numbers, and the more versatile Stills wrote arguably their greatest songs (such as "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes" and "Helplessly Hoping"), which brought the vocal talents of all three of them together perfectly.
When the question of touring to support the album arose, they decided to augment their sound with a new member. Enter Neil Young, a former Buffalo Springfield bandmate of Stills, and who in the time since Springfield's demise had already recorded two fantastic solo albums. The tour was a success and was followed by another critically acclaimed album, Deja Vu. Young's electric guitar work adorned most of the songs, taking the lush acoustic textures of the first album into more hard-edged territories. Young also sang lead vocals on two songs of his own, and its probably fair to say that these can be considered solo works with CS&N backing. Over the years Young has always been the one whose membership has been the loosest, and his contributions to Deja Vu could be viewd as those of a guest musician. Nevertheless the result was a much more varied and diverse record, and an even greater success than the debut. Even today it is these two albums which are considered the archetypal CSN&Y, and as good as it is all their later work has paled in comparison.
Here are those first two classic albums for your listening pleasure. I have also put together another collection I have named Find The Cost Of Freedom. Featured here is the classic protest single "Ohio" and its b-side, which was released shortly after Deja Vu, and a number of other tracks from various sources - demos, unreleased songs and covers. Some of them come from the CSN boxed set released in 1991, and some of them come from more obscure sources and can't be found on any official releases. I'm pretty certain they were all recorded in the same timeframe of the first two albums, so make a good companion to them. The result is a brilliant album by itself. Of particular note is the stunning studio version of "The Lee Shore", my absolute favourite CSN&Y track of all time, and "Sea Of Madness", which has only ever been released as part of the live Woodstock soundtrack - here it is in its (superior) studio form.

Neil Young - After The Gold Rush (1970)

After Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young released Deja Vu, all four members followed it with their own solo efforts. Whilst for the others these records were debuts, After The Gold Rush was Neil Young's third. Stylistically it retained the rawness and simplicity of Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, but was more mellow and introspective in mood. Due to Crazy Horse guitarist Danny Whitten's deteriotating health, only three tracks featured the full backing band. The others found Young collaborating with CSNY bassist Greg Reeves and Nils Lofgren playing piano, an instrument he was unfamiliar with at the time, being primarily a guitarist. This simplistic acoustic guitar/piano/bass/drums formula drove many of the songs, giving the album a laid-back country rock feel. The most famous songs here are the title track and "Southern Man", a stinging criticism of redneck racism. After The Gold Rush proved to be a bigger success than both of Young's previous records.

Neil Young - Harvest (1972)

Harvest continued Neil Young's mellow country-rock style which he had developed with After The Gold Rush. Though whilst that record had been raw and simplistic in approach and production, recorded with a rag-tag band of friends and associates, Harvest saw Young recording in Nashville with an assortment of professional session musicians. The result was a smoother and more commercially successful record. On most of the album he was backed by The Stray Gators, consisting of bassist Tim Drummond, drummer Kenney Buttrey, pedal steel guitarist Ben Keith (who has continued to work with Young to the present day), and pianist Jack Nitzsche, who had contributed on all his records beforehand since the Buffalo Springfield days. David Crosby, Graham Nash, Stephen Stills, James Taylor and Linda Ronstadt also appeared as guest backing vocalists. Two of the tracks also saw him working with the London Symphony Orchestra. Harvest is best remembered for the hit single "Heart Of Gold", generally considered Neil Young's most well-known song.

Buffalo Springfield - Buffalo Springfield (1966), Buffalo Springfield Again (1967), Last Time Around (1968), Down To The Wire

Buffalo Springfield were an influential 60s folk-rock band from L.A, consisting of Stephen Stills (vocals, lead guitar), Richie Furay (vocals, rhythm guitar), Bruce Palmer (bass), Dewey Martin (drums) and Canadian Neil Young (vocals, lead guitar). Boasting three singers and songwriters, their first album consisted entirely of originals, whilst in comparison their forerunners the Byrds had relied on cover songs at the beginning of their career. It was Stills' "For What It's Worth" that became their biggest hit. With their second album, Buffalo Springfield Again, the individual styles and identities of the three songwriters became more apparent. By the time Last Time Around was released, the band had broken up. Richie Furay went on to form country-rock band Poco, Stephen Stills formed folk-rock supergroup Crosby, Stills & Nash, and Neil Young began a prolific solo career.
Here are their three studio albums.
In 2001 a Buffalo Springfield boxed set was released, and it contained a treasure trove of unreleased songs. I have put the best of these together to form a "fourth album", Down To The Wire. Among the songs included here, Neil Young would later revisit "Down, Down, Down" as part of "Country Girl", and "What A Day" (here with lead vocals by Stills) would appear on Poco's first album. "Baby Don't Scold Me" was on early pressings of the debut album, but was later replaced by "For What It's Worth" when it became a hit. "Down To The Wire" would later find release on Neil Young's compilation album Decade - this version has Stills singing instead.

Neil Young - Time Fades Away (1973)

After the commercial success of Harvest, Neil Young shocked and bemused his fans with his next release. The story behind it makes it even more interesting. Since Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, the album he recorded with Crazy Horse, rhythm guitarist Danny Whitten had sunk into heroin addiction. He only appeared briefly on After The Gold Rush, and the Horse were not used at all for Harvest. The latter album did include "The Needle & The Damage Done" though, a song which turned out to be disturbingly prophetic of the events to come. When it came to touring to support Harvest, Young took the Stray Gators on the road. He planned for Whitten to join them as a second guitarist, but when at rehearsals if became clear he was not functioning due to his addiction, Young dismissed him, giving him $50 and a plane ticket home. Whitten took the money and spent it on heroin, on which he overdosed and died.
As a result, the tour became a dark and shambolic event. With Whitten's death laying heavily on his thoughts, Young played new material unfamiliar to the audience, the Stray Gators lumbering along in a rag-tag style, a far cry from their pristine sound on Harvest. Young's vocals became hoarse and cracked, as he drank heavily throughout the shows and developed a throat infection. Drummer Kenny Buttrey quit, and was replaced by Johnny Barbata. David Crosby and Graham Nash were called in to add vocal support, leading to further clashes within the band.
Eventually Time Fades Away was released - a live album of the new songs performed on the tour. It was drastically different from Harvest, and alienated alot of fans Young had gained with that record's success. The sense of doom and darkness is truly apparent on the recordings, and it shows Young at his most raw and ragged. However, worth noting is that two songs ("Journey Through The Past" and "Love In Mind") were not taken from the '73 tour, but an earlier '71 solo tour just before the release of Harvest.
It is now referred to as the first of the infamous "ditch trilogy", which saw Young's music taking a darker and drastically uncommercial turn after the death of his friend. Though the record sales at the time might have suggested that he had 'lost it', looking back it can be seen as some of the most authentic and interesting music in his career.
Whatever the case, the resultant Time Fades Away is an undeniably great collection of songs.
01 - Time Fades Away
02 - Journey Through The Past
03 - Yonder Stands The Sinner
04 - L.A.
05 - Love In Mind
06 - Don't Be Denied
07 - The Bridge

Neil Young - On The Beach (1974)

After recording Tonight's The Night and having it rejected by his record company, Neil Young's next project was On The Beach. It concluded the 'Ditch Trilogy' of dark, despairing albums which were released after his commercial hit Harvest. But whilst Tonight's The Night was bleak and shambolic, On The Beach did have a hint of optimism somewhere within it... it signalled Young's final farewell to despair.
Nevertheless, it was still a strongly uncommercial album, just not to the extent of the rejected Tonight's The Night. The core trio of musicians backing Young throughout were Crazy Horse drummer Ralph Molina, Stray Gator bassist Tim Drummond, and steel guitarist Ben Keith, who had been working with him since the Harvest days. Also contributing were a group of friends and associates - Crazy Horse bassit Billy Talbot, Levon Helm and Rick Danko of The Band, Crosby & Nash, Rusty Kershaw and George Whitsell. The lyrics of the album focused mostly on the downsides of fame, something Young was reluctant to be part of since the success of Harvest. The result is often considered one of Young's most enduring works.
Though it was recorded after Tonight's The Night, it was released first. The latter was finally released in 1975, but by that time Young had moved on and left his dark years behind him.
01 - Walk On
02 - See The Sky About To Rain
03 - Revolution Blues
04 - For The Turnstiles
05 - Vampire Blues
06 - On The Beach
07 - Motion Pictures
08 - Ambulance Blues
Neil Young - Zuma (1975)

With the Ditch Trilogy finally behind him, Neil Young reformed Crazy Horse with new rhythm guitarist Frank Sampedro, and released Zuma. The first release billed as 'Neil Young & Crazy Horse' since 1969's Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, it can be seen as both a return from despair and a sign of new, optimistic horizons in sight. Bassist Billy Talbot and drummer Ralph Molina had staggered along with Young in various band configurations since '69, and at last with Sampedro they were the Horse again. The album's tone was characteristically raw and ragged, but notably more upbeat and commercial-sounding than Young's previous few releases.
However two of the songs came from different sessions, as Young had attempted to release a couple of other records between On The Beach and Zuma. "Pardon My Heart" came from the abandoned Homegrown album, of which various other tracks would see release on other records throughout his career. And the closing number "Through My Sails" was the only result of an attempted Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young reunion from the previous year.
01 - Don't Cry No Tears
02 - Dangerbird
03 - Pardon My Heart
04 - Lookin' For A Love
05 - Barstool Blues

07 - Drive Back
08 - Cortez The Killer
09 - Through My Sails
The Stills-Young Band - Long May You Run (1976)

In 1975 Neil Young had made a commercial comeback after his 'Ditch Trilogy' with a reformed Crazy Horse, releasing Zuma. He carried this new-found energy forward into a collaboration with ex-bandmate Stephen Stills. Since their glory days together with Buffalo Springfield and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Stills had released a series of successful solo albums, and fronted the band Manassas. The duo released Long May You Run in 1976. It was not quite a true collaboration though, as the nine songs were all written by either Stills or Young alone. In that respect, the album can be seen as the two of them sharing vinyl-space together, and adding to each other's compositions with a bit of guitar and backing vocals here and there. However the album did have a unified sound throughout, largely due to the same backing band (George Perry on bass, Joe Vitale on drums, Jerry Aiello on keyboards and Joe Lala on percussion) used on all songs. The result was a largely laid-back, summery sounding record. Hardly a highlight in the careers of either Stills or Young, but nevertheless a strong album.
01 - Long May You Run
02 - Make Love To You
03 - Midnight On The Bay
04 - Black Coral
05 - Ocean Girl
06 - Let It Shine
07 - 12/8 Blues (All The Same)
08 - Fontainebleau
09 - Guardian Angel
Neil Young - American Stars N Bars (1977)

After 1976's collaboration with Stephen Stills, Neil Young's next studio release was the peculiar American Stars N Bars. Most of the tracks he recorded with Crazy Horse, augmented by Ben Keith on pedal steel (at this point Keith had played on almost all of his records since Harvest), Carole Mayedo on violin, and backing vocals from Nicolette Larson and Linda Ronstadt. The result was a collection of rollicking country and western tunes - the closest he had come to pure country so far in his career, albeit with Crazy Horse's characteristic stomping rawness and one-take 'charm'.
Over the previous few years Young had recorded a huge catalogue of unreleased material, and three of these found their way on to American Stars N Bars. They made what was almost a straight country-rock album into something fragmented and somewhat confused... it has become an oddity in his discography. The songs from other sessions were the quaint, mellow "Star Of Bethlehem", which admittedly fit in fine stylistically with the new material, "Like A Hurricane", the raging rocker which had become the highlight of his live shows and would endure as one of his best-loved songs, and the spooky, shimmering, "Will To Love". The last two of these stood out like a sore thumb among the other songs, but were undeniably the album's highlights.
01 - The Old Country Waltz
02 - Saddle Up The Palomino
03 - Hey Babe
04 - Hold Back The Tears
05 - Bite The Bullet
06 - Star Of Bethlehem
07 - Will To Love
08 - Like A Hurricane
09 - Homegrown
Neil Young - Rust Never Sleeps (1979), Live Rust (1979)

In 1978 Neil Young embarked on the theatrical 'Rust Never Sleeps' tour with Crazy Horse, which featured oversized microphone and guitar amp props, hooded roadies, and other strange characters crossing the stage between songs. With a host of new songs, the tour was filmed, and three seperate products came out of it in the end.
The first was the Rust Never Sleeps album, consisting of entirely new songs. Most of the tracks were based on live concert recordings, with assorted overdubs (though one song, "Sail Away", did not come from the tour). Side one was acoustic, and side two electric, and the LP was bookended by different versions of one song - the acoustic "My My, Hey Hey (Out Of The Blue)" and the electric "Hey Hey, My My (Into The Black)". With some of his strongest songs yet, it instantly found a place as one of his best albums. The electric side showcased Crazy Horse at their heaviest and most rocking - undoubtedly influenced by the Punk movement which was all the rage at the time.
A film of the tour (also called Rust Never Sleeps) was released on video, featuring a different setlist without the overdubs. The soundtrack to this was released as Live Rust. The first record is subsequently considered the 'Studio Rust' album, despite the fact that the songs were mostly cut live, and the second can be considered the same ideas put across in a form closer to the original concert experience. Live Rust was a double album, and found some of the new songs interspersed among older classics such as "After The Goldrush", "Comes A Time", "Like A Hurricane", "Cinnamon Girl" and "Cortez The Killer". A few songs here are worth noting - "I Am A Child" was originally from his days with Buffalo Springfield ten years ago, "Sugar Mountain" had not been released on a studio album yet, but only as a B-side and on the retrospective Decade, and "Tonight's The Night" was noticeable different to the original in a new rocking Crazy Horse arrangement. As his first live release, it gave the record-buying public who had not seen him in concert their first opportunity to experience what both sides of his music sounded like on stage - the solo acoustic side and the Crazy Horse side.
A comeback of sorts, the 'Rust' albums proved Young could continue to reinvent himself and come up with first-class new material as the 70s came to a close.

Neil Young - Comes A Time (1978)

In 1978 Neil Young released Comes A Time. Stylistically, it was a return to his acoustic roots, to this day remaining one of his most country-based records. After the rough and minimalistic sounds he had recently been maing with Zuma and American Stars 'N Bars, it was his most carefully produced album since his smash hit Harvest. But with the 70s drawing to a close and the 60s a long distant memory, his generation of musicians were being pushed out by a younger crowed, so it did not share the success of the afore-mentioned album.
Comes A Time featured heavy country-based instrumentation (acoustic guitars, piano, pedal steel and fiddles), and at times unashamedly emersed itself in the genre. Many of the tracks also had orchestral backing, something unusual for Young's music. Another notable factor contributing to its unique sound was Nicolette Larson's harmony vocals which adorned most of the album. However two tracks ("Look Out For My Love" and "Lotta Love") were noticeably looser and rawer, the reason being that they were recorded with an acoustic Crazy Horse.
Though it is generally overshadowed by his more well-known albums, Comes A Time is an excellent Neil Young record, and also one of his most accessible.

Neil Young - The Early Demos

Neil Young has a vast back-catalogue of unreleased material, and to put it all into one album would be a mammoth task - not just due to the huge number of unreleased songs he has, but the numerous different versions of them (different studio and live recordings) that exsist.
Here is one for the fans. A small collection of really early demos. I'm not entirely sure when they were recorded - perhaps before his Buffalo Springfield days. Of the seven songs here, different demo recordings of tracks 5 and 6 were released on the 2001 Buffalo Springfield boxed set. "Nowadays Clancy Can't Even Sing" was re-recorded in 1966 for the first Buffalo Springfield album with Richie Furay singing. The remaining tracks haven't seen official release that I know of.
01 - Run Around Babe
02 - I Ain't Got The Blues
03 - Don't Pity Me Babe
04 - Nowadays Clancy Can't Even Sing
05 - One More Sign
06 - The Rent Is Always Due
07 - When It Falls, It Falls On You
Neil Young - Hawks & Doves (1980)

In 1980 Young came out with this subtle, quiet and criminally underrated album. The two sides of the vinyl had noticeably different characteristics (hence the title), but they worked together fantastically, resulting in one of his most consistent records. The songs from side one were taken from various recording sessions dating as far back as 1974, and had an at times spooky, ethereal tone, even more powerful due to their apparent quietness. "The Old Homestead" featured Levon Helm (of The Band) on drums and Tim Drummond on bass, but the other three songs were solo numbers (though "Lost In Space" featured alot of overdubs). Side two saw Young backed by a band consisted of Ben Keith (steel guitar and dobro), Rufus Thibodeaux (fiddle), Dennis Belfield (bass) and Greg Thomas (drums), playing some stomping country and western tunes reminiscent of side one of American Stars N Bars. But whilst that album had been raw and abrasive, the country on Hawks & Doves had a quaint, gentle charm (though nowhere near the summery orchestration of Comes A Time). Lyrically, it seemed to be unashamedly patriotic ("Oh, this country sure looks good to me" and "I'm proud to be living in the USA"), which was surprising considering Young's earlier political criticism in songs such as "Ohio". But Young was approaching middle age, and had a family - he clearly wasn't interested in being the spokesman he once was.

02 - The Old Homestead
03 - Lost In Space
04 - Captain Kennedy
05 - Stayin' Power
06 - Coastline
07 - Union Man

Neil Young - Re-ac-tor (1981)

Re-ac-tor (recorded with Crazy Horse) came out in 1981, a year after the great but sadly overlooked Hawks & Doves, and marked another stylistic change between records. It had a heavy, raw sound, a stylistic continuation from the punk-influnced numbers on Rust Never Sleeps such as "Welfare Mothers" and "Sedan Delivery". The one song to not feature this heavy, distorted sound was the piano-based blues "Get Back On It". It also was the first record on which Young began to experiment with synthesizers.
However, though it had promises of stylistic progress and modernisation, the reality of the album was that it was little more than a collection of loose jams and experiments with Crazy Horse. Subsequently it did not go down too well with the critics, and is one of the more-often forgotten records in Young's discography. The one track which highlights the album's problems is "T-bone", a nine-minute number which only features the lyrics "Got mashed potato. Ain't got no T-bone."
Certainly it is true that anyone looking for lyrical genius or career-defining songs in Re-ac-tor will be dissapointed. But anyone looking for that is perhaps missing the point of the album, which is that Young was now middle-aged, had a family, and his generation had been pushed aside by a new, younger crowd of musicians. This album simply represents a document of what he was doing in these years away from the spotlight, the sounds he was experimenting with, and the songs he had come up with, without any plans to light up the charts or to create an artistic masterpiece.

02 - Surfer Joe & Moe The Sleeze

Neil Young - Trans (1982)

In 1982 Neil Young came out with an album that truly baffled his fans - Trans. Since 1979's Rust Never Sleeps he had faded away from the spotlight somewhat, the critics treating his releases with either contempt or indifference - Hawks & Doves had been pleasant enough but its quaint, modest feel had not made much of an impact, and Re-ac-tor had been dismissed as a poorly-concieved throwaway. His glory days were surely over, but he was still releasing records... and trying his hand at new trends in music. Trans must have horrified the critics still expecting a follow-up to Harvest. It was the document of his brief experiment with electro-rock, a long way from his country-rock success days.
The album opened with the upbeat "Little Thing Called Love", which suggested nothing too strange... But once the second song began, it was clear Young was experimenting. The record was dominated throughout by synthesizers, drum machines and vocoders, masking most of his lyrics with an eerie robotic voice. However a close study of the lyrics revealed something quite meaningful and powerful... Young's son was born with cerebral palsy, and he found that he could elicit a better response from him when using the vocoder. With this background information, songs like "Transformer Man" make more sense. And the truth is that the Trans songs are all very good. It's just a pity that how they were recorded meant many Young fans dismissed them at first, filing them under an experiment gone badly wrong.
Trans should be listened to with an open mind, and it's true that it might only be for die-hard Neil Young fans. It represents his continuing experimentation and lack of regard for commercial viability as he entered the eighties. Much like on Re-ac-tor, he was simply having fun trying out new musical ideas, and if any of his fans enjoyed it, that was a bonus! Personally, I think Trans is an excellent record, with a strong unifying theme that makes for an eerie, powerful sound. But the fans will always be divided over this one!

Gene Clark was an American singer-songwriter, best known as a founding member of folk-rock band the Byrds. He was their main songwriter until he departed in 1966. Sadly, after leaving he consistently failed to achieve solo success. The Fantastic Expedition Of Dillard & Clark

Fraternity (Bon Scott) - Livestock

Before he found his way into AC/DC in 1974, Bon Scott had been the lead vocalist with two leading Australian bands. The first, dispensing crisp bubble-pop, was The Valentines. The second, turning out expansive, intriguing, underground 'hippy type' music on one hand & hard-rockin' boogie on the other, was Fraternity

Rabbit was an Australian hard rock band from Newcastle, Australia. The band was formed in 1973 by Mark Tinson (guitar), Phil Screen (drums) and Jim Porteus (bass). Heaven, the demo tape is one of the last (official?) recordings from Alan Fryer and the boys. Released in 1988 to a lucky few who were around to grab it, I think these songs are very good for their time. They are very 80's and I'm not to sure what is the line up on this but, I hope you enjoy these extremely rare recordings.

John Paul Young was the most popular and successful Australian male solo singer of the late Seventies. His rapid rise to fame began when he was chosen by producer Simon Napier-Bell to record a song called Pasadena, written by former Easybeats' Harry Vanda and George Young. It became a hit in 1972. The big breakthrough came in March 1975 when Alberts released John's recording of Vanda & Young's "Yesterday's Hero", a song about the fleeting nature of pop stardom which clearly drew on Harry and George's own experiences as former teen idols. Hard Road

[Stevie Wright astride a bronze lion in Trafalgar Sq., London, 1975. Photo entitled "Portrait of Stevie Wright, London, 1975" by Gary Ede, originally published here.]
One of the most significant non-Bon discoveries I made while working on the Bon Scott Blog was the music of Stevie Wright. By chance, I found Stevie’s album Hard Road at a flea market. I had a vague notion that Stevie had something to do with Bon, so I bought it for a mere seven bucks. Since then (my girlfriend gave me a record player for my birthday) and Hard Road has been on high rotation. It is brilliant.

[poster image from here]
I note that wikipedia says he put out an album called Black-eyed Bruiser in 1975 (and the above image would support that idea!), but when I searched for Black-eyed Bruiser, I mostly found reference to an album by Rose Tattoo.

The Good: The album begins instantly with a throwback, familiar scream, “Sooo leeeett’s roooooockkkkk and rolllll!!!” abruptly questioning whether or not you’re experiencing an acid flashback from 1979 while listening to Bon Scott’s vocal barrage that was Highway to Hell. Once the guitars kick in, it’s more than enough to get your temporal lobe gyrating with nostalgic bliss. This is no AC/DC knockoff – is it actually them? Possessed by some sort of maniacal Rock Demon? ( Read more... )

http://rapidshare.com/files/111538272/DaDiablo Swing Orchestra
The origin of the name of the band is related on their website. The back-story recounts a historically questionable ancestral story beginning in 16th century Sweden. Supposedly, ancestors of the band members performed orchestral works in defiance of the ruling church at the time (possibly in reference to the newly installed protestant Lutheran national church, in power during the mid and late 16th century). The orchestra was forced to go into hiding, performing in secret, with the assistance of oppressed peasants during the era. After years of performing for the pleasure of these peasants, the story claims that the church put a bounty on the performers' lives, and that this bounty was so high that the orchestra knew they would soon be captured, and thus chose to play a spectacular final show before becoming martyred to the church.

Candlemass
Candlemass are a Swedish doom metal band established in the 1980s by Leif Edling (bass), their leader and songwriter. The band is originally from Stockholm. After the breakup of his first band Nemesis in 1985, bassist Leif Edling started his own band under the name Candlemass with vocalist Johan Längqvist, guitarist Mats Mappe Bjorkman, and drummer Matz Ekström. Their first release, Epicus Doomicus Metallicus (1986), immediately secured their standing, positioning the band within metal circles, setting a milestone in the doom metal scene.

Bourbon Crow
Bourbon Crow is the outlaw country project formed by horror aficionado Wednesday 13 and former Wednesday 13 bass player Rayen Belchere. The band cite many country legends such as Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard as their main influences, claiming that Highway to Hangovers is a salute to these musicians. The subject matter of many of the songs on the record is comical, with satirical lyrics about such topics as alcohol, sex and death however Bourbon Crow state the album was a serious attempt at Outlaw Country.

Goatsnake Discography
Goatsnake was formed in 1996 after the disbanding of The Obsessed. After The Obsessed's disbanding, the rhythm section consisting of Guy Pinhas (former bassist of the Dutch stonerband Beaver) on bass and Greg Rogers on drums began jamming with guitarist Greg Anderson (Thorr's Hammer, Burning Witch, Sunn O)))). They soon found a vocalist in Pete Stahl (Scream, Wool, Earthlings?, Desert Sessions) and so became Goatsnake.

Ive been asked multiple times for this one and have been wanting it for myself for some time now. I am listening to it as I post this and daaamn its amazing. As far as I know this hasn't hit any other blogs yet so get it first right here! (tho i easily could be wrong)
Those Poor Bastards' singer Lonesome Wyatt teams up with Rachel Brooke for ten songs of woe and unrelenting despair. Rachel and Lonesome each wrote half of the songs, but they sing all of them together. Recommended for those who are sick at heart.

Lonesome Wyatt and Rachel Brooke: A Bitter Harvest (2009)

"Those Poor Bastards Are the best Gothic Country I have heard yet to this day. The depressing gloomy vocals coming out of this drifter named Lonesome Wyatt has hints of Marilyn Manson to Nick Cave, Throwrag and maybe even a hint of a demented Adam Ant with a shot of a Pilled Up Johnny Cash... And the Minister is backing up Lonesome Wyatt with a style that is a cross between erie strung out folk music with a creepy blend of The Nightmare Before Christmas!!!!!!!!!" - Hank Williams III

Sons of Perdition
Sons Of Perdition are a gothic country band from Arkansas, similar to Those Poor Bastards. Their lastest release “Kingdom Of Fire” is a miserable collection of tales of desperation. Very dark country music, creepy and scary, very very desperate, songs The Party, Anhelo, Fall to Your knees are particular highlights. If you like dark, creepy country this is as good as it gets.
